Is This Course For You?

This course is for you if...

  • You love being out in wide, open landscapes but struggle to capture that feeling of space in your paintings

  • You've been painting for a while and want to be more expressive — less tight, more alive

  • You want personal feedback and guidance from a working artist, not just pre-recorded tutorials

  • You're ready to push your work in a new direction and discover what your paintings could become

What’s better than getting out into the landscape and feeling the sense of peace and tranquility of a wide open space?

It's so good for your mind and gives you a chance to clear your head.

In my own work, I aim to recreate that experience — making paintings which give back some of the sense of space and openness you have when out in the wild.

For many, recreating the emotion of an expansive landscape is what they yearn for. In this course, I'll show you the ways I've found to make paintings that go beyond describing what a place looks like and also communicate what it felt like to be there.

The Course

What we'll be working on together

  • We'll start by gathering visual ideas outside — through a combination of sketches, photos and written notes. In the studio, we'll explore different compositions and work towards finished paintings.

  • Dealing with horizons — how to use them creatively rather than letting them divide your painting

  • Creating rhythm & movement — bringing energy and life to wide open spaces

  • Suggesting depth and space — making your paintings feel expansive, not flat

  • Exploring composition — finding bold, expressive arrangements from simple observations

  • How a little detail goes a long way — the balance between ambiguity and specificity

  • Mark making — developing your own language of marks to express what you see and feel

How It Works

A live course — like an in-person workshop, only better

  • In depth videos tutorials on a wide range of topics

  • Integrated community group here on the course website

  • Weekly LIVE Q&As

  • Personal feedback on all your work from Lewis over 2 weeks

  • 12 Months unlimited access to all course material

How does it work?

This is a two-week course with personalised feedback and guidance from me throughout. After the initial two weeks, you’ll continue to have full access to all course materials and the community for a full 12 months.

You’ll receive in-depth video tutorials with clear, detailed demonstrations, designed to give you everything you need to create your own work with confidence. The demonstrations are presented as if you were attending an in-person workshop only better, because you can pause, rewind and rewatch them whenever you like.

As you work through the tutorials, you’re invited to share your progress in the private community group built directly into the course website. This makes the course highly interactive, with plenty of discussion, feedback, and support along the way.

Class sizes are kept intentionally small so everyone receives the attention they need. I don’t use a team of assistants, so all feedback and comments come directly from me.

Lewis performed magic during this course! I was amazed to see Lewis's own paintings, my work and that of others in the group open up as we applied his teachings about detail and ambiguity. Powerful stuff and all delivered in his uniquely thoughtful and down-to-earth style. Thanks Lewis.

Hi Lewis, I wanted to thank you for the course, I’ve loved it. It has really pushed me. I feel that it has helped me to trust in a creative process, and in doing so, I’ve learned to let go more and take risks. That seems to have given me a freedom to be much more creative with my work during the course, and I feel it’s going to make a big difference to my painting going forward, that’s a real gift, thank you

I moved to a wide open landscape a while ago and was struggling to draw and paint it. During part one of the course I made my best ever sketches of my landscape and in part two began to find a way to paint it. I much prefer to paint landscapes I know well, and as a result get to know the place even better, so this course was just what I needed! Thank you.

Common questions

I'm in the US / a different time zone — will this work for me?

Absolutely. Over half of my students are in North America. The community and feedback work across all time zones — post your work whenever suits you and I'll respond. The live Q&As are all recorded so you can watch them at your convenience.

What if I can't finish everything in 2 weeks?

That's completely fine. You get 12 months of full access to all the materials. The 2-week live period is when I provide personal feedback on your work — but you can continue working through the tutorials at your own pace long after that.

What level do I need to be at?

If you're comfortable holding a brush and have some painting experience, you'll get a lot from this course. It's not about technical perfection — it's about developing your creative approach to landscape painting. Whether you've been painting for 2 years or 20, the process works.

What materials will I need?

I'll cover materials in the first lesson. You won't need anything unusual — basic painting supplies, a sketchbook, and something to draw with. The course works with any painting medium.

How is this different from your on-demand courses?

The on-demand courses are self-paced with no live interaction. Wide Open Landscapes is a live experience — I'm there with you for 2 weeks, giving personal feedback on your work, answering your questions in real time, and guiding you through the process. It's the closest thing to working with me in person.

Can I pay in instalments?

Yes — you can pay in 3 monthly payments of £100 instead of £280 upfront. Choose the payment plan option at checkout.

Ready to find the feeling of space in your paintings?

Wide Open Landscapes starts April 13th. Class sizes are kept small so everyone gets the attention they deserve. £280 — or 3 monthly payments of £100.
